  • In this commentary, I argue why we should stop engaging in null hypothesis statistical significance testing altogether. Artificial and misleading it may be, but we know how to play the p value threshold and null hypothesis-testing game. We feel secure; we love the certainty. The fly in the ointment is that the conventions have led to questionable research practices. Wasserstein, Schirm, & Lazar (Am Stat 73(sup1):1–19, 2019. https://doi.org/10.1080/00031305. 2019.1583913) explain why, in their thought-provoking editorial introducing a special issue of The American Statistician: ‘‘As ‘statistical significance’ is used less, statistical thinking will be used more.’’ Perhaps we empirical researchers can together find a way to work ourselves out of the straitjacket that binds us. Journal of...

  • Distinguishing between consumers’ positive and negative affect is a popular approach in both marketing research and practice, but such valence-based approaches sacrifice specificity and explanatory power. As emotions of the same valence can greatly differ with regard to their underlying appraisal patterns, they also differently affect consumer judgment and behavior. Our meta-analysis of 1035 effect sizes (N = 40,777) across 10 discrete emotions shows that analyzing discrete emotions clearly outperforms models of core affect (valence and arousal) when studying firm–customer encounters. Specifically, we find that the greatest impact stems from the medium-arousal emotion of gratitude and that positive emotions show consistently stronger effect sizes than do negative emotions. We also e...

  • Are entrepreneurial cultures stable over time? In this paper, we use historical measures of the outgrowth of entrepreneurial culture in China and test whether these correlate with entrepreneurial activities today. We employ provincial panel data from China documenting the regional distribution of entrepreneurial activities during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) and the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912) and private firm activities in post-reform China (1992–2012). Our study finds a significant association between the regional distribution of historical and current measures of entrepreneurship, supporting (1) the long-term stability of underlying regional cultural differences; and (2) the adaptability of entrepreneurial activities to changing institutional arrangements and relative payoff struc...

  • Persistence in self-employment is crucial for entrepreneurial activities to generate longterm economic benefits. Consequently, this research examined the commitment of the self-employed towards their business as an important determinant of persistence. However, this research treats the self-employed as one entity. Yet we assume that especially for the research on commitment the differentiation of the self-employed into solo self-employed individuals (self-employed individuals without employees) and employer entrepreneurs (self-employed individuals with employees) provides seminal insights. Thus, this study examined differences in affective commitment to (emotional attachment to and identification with) one’s business and its antecedents between these self-employment forms. We used ...

  • Artifact-centric process models aim to describe complex processes as a collection of interacting artifacts. Recent development in process mining allow for the discovery of such models. However, the focus is often on the representation of the individual artifacts rather than their interactions. Based on event data, composite state machines representing artifact-centric processes can be discovered automatically. Moreover, the study provides ways of visualising and quantifying interactions among different artifacts. For example, strongly correlated behaviours in different artifacts can be highlighted. Interesting correlations can be subsequently analysed to identify potential causes of process performance issues. The study provides a strategy to explore the interactions and performan...

  • This study aims to identify the location and cluster pattern of manufacturing SMEs in Khulna City and the reasons behind such pattern since localisation of SMEs has significant impact on the economic development of cities and regions. A walking survey was conducted to identify the SME location pattern and a semi-structured personal interview was conducted to collect data from manufacturing SME entrepreneurs to find why such patterns exist. A cross section qualitative multiple case study design and pattern matching technique was applied to answer the research questions. The finding of the study shows SME location choice was influenced by a combination of location specific, personal, and community factors whereby personal factors are prioritised over other factors in location selecti...

  • The water-supply system of Li River in Guangxi Province, China, was selected for the case study. The results show that the operating policy proposed in this study is better than conventional operating rules and aggregated standard operating policy (SOP) for both water supply and hydropower generation due to the use of hedging mechanisms and effective coordination among multiple objectives.

  • Modern river basin management treats flooding not only as a threat, but also as a precious water resource. In inland areas, dams are built to impound water in reservoirs. In coastal regions, however, building reservoirs does not seem to be an obvious choice, at least at first glance. How to develop more freshwater for coastal cities becomes a challenging issue. For coastal regions with abundant precipitation and/or river outflow, the key to solving water shortage problem is to find a suitable place to store freshwater, especially during the flood season.

  • Since the first impoundment of Three Gorges Dam in 2003, algal blooms occur frequently in the near-dam tributaries. An attempt is made in our study to develop reservoir operation rules that would reduce the level of algal blooms in the near-dam tributaries. The reservoir operations can further increase the water exchange between the mainstream of the Three Gorges Reservoir and the Xiangxi River tributary and thus move a larger amount of algae into the deep water where it would die. Analysis of the model results indicated that water is charge fluctuations consisting of a lower night-time valley-load flow and a larger flow component to satisfy daytime peak load during short-term operations (within a day), the rise in water level during the medium-term operation (e.g., over weeks), an...
