  • The total phenolic contents of A. cepa and A. Sativum are represented in Figs. 1 and 2 and Table 1. The phenolic contents of A. cepa (onions) and A. sativum (garlic) are interpreted in Table 1 for both the aqueous extract and ethanol extracts. The highest phenolic content was observed in the A. cepa aqueous extract and the lowest in A. sativum ethanol extracts. Garlic, red, brown, and white onions showed a varying number of phytochemicals. The aqueous extract of A. cepa (0.5550 ± 0.36) and A. Sativum (0.2543 ± 0.21) was significantly higher in phenolic content compared to the ethanolic extract (0.1520 ± 0.15) and 0.1322 ± 0.10, respectively

  • ata revealed the effect of yeast extract on calli of the two varieties. Double Decker calli recorded maximum caffeic acid derivatives and total hydrolysable sugars after 30 days of cultivation using 1.5 g/l and 1.0 g/l yeast extract respectively whereas, in Rubinstern calli, the maximum caffeic acid derivatives and total hydrolysable sugars were recorded at 1.0 g/l after 30 days. Using 50 mM jasmonic acid, Double Decker calli recorded maximum values of caffeic acid derivatives and total hydrolysable sugars after 15 days. In Rubinstern calli, caffeic acid derivatives and total hydrolysable sugar recorded maximum values after 30 days at 200 mM jasmonic acid and after 15 days at 50 mM jasmonic acid, respectively.

  • The results revealed that MSG inclusion above 0.75 g/kg diet significantly (P < 0.05) increased the serum Na+ and K+ concentrations of the broiler chickens when compared with birds on the control diet, whereas the serum Cl− concentration significantly (P < 0.05) decreased from 0.50 g MSG/kg diet inclusion level. On the other hand, MSG inclusion level above 0.50 g/kg diet increased the serum MDA concentration (from 2.60 ± 0.01 to 4.60 ± 0.00) of the birds while serum GSH-Px and T-AOC concentrations significantly (P < 0.05) reduced from 170 ± 0.28 to 120 ± 0.26 and 3.30 ± 0.01 to 1.70 ± 0.01, respectively.

  • We searched for the main medicinal properties of Taraxacum officinale in the scientific literature, using the PubMed database. We selected 54 studies and we described twelve therapeutic properties, which are reported in previous studies. These properties are diuretic, hepatoprotective, anticolitis, immunoprotective, antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, antiarthritic, antidiabetic, antiobesity, antioxidant and anticancer effects. We also found that the most frequently reported therapeutic effects include hepatoprotective, antioxidant and anticancer activities.

  • DPPH scavenging activity of solvent extracts showed more potential towards the polar end with its maximum activity in methanolic extract (84.64%). Acetone extract showed more ferric reducing power than the ethanol fractions. Maximum flavonoid quantification was recorded in ethanol extract. GC–MS of methanolic extract detected 39 compounds of which 22 have preventive and curing properties for several ailments.   • Protein formed the highest percentage both in raw and steamed samples with the mean values of 47.61 g/100 g and 46.04 g/100 g respectively. The total mineral content was higher in raw sample (237.40 mg 100 g−1) than in steamed sample (201.05 mg 100 g−1), in the decreasing order of phosphorus > sodium > calcium > potassium > magnesium. Raw sample had the highest proportion of energy contribution, which was from protein (PEP = 53.1%), while the least energy contribution was from fat (PEF = 3.1%) in steamed sample. The cholesterol content of raw T. fuscatus var radula was 0.15 ± 0.01 mg/100 g, being reduced by steaming to 0.12 ± 0.02 mg/100 g, while a nonsignificantly lower percentage of oleic was also observed in steamed sample (0.98 ± 0.01%).
