  • We examined the distribution characteristics of RPF in the topsoils (0–40 cm) in an oasis agroecosystem in Northwest China. After cotton harvest in 2016, we collected 2304 soil samples - A total of 2471 pieces of RPF were separated and weighted. The accumulation of the larger RPF fragments (>25 mg per piece) primarily took place from 5 to 15 years after mulching started. It took over 15 years for the larger RPF fragments to degrade into smaller ones (<25 mg per piece), which accounted for 65% of the total number of RPF fragments in the field with 19-year of mulching.   • Thesis assessed the ability of indirect estimation of nitrogen using the link with leaf traits retrieved from PROSPECT-5 model inversion; evaluated the feasibility of retrieving nitrogen through recalibrating PROSPECT- 5 by incorporating the effects of leaf protein and cellulose + lignin on leaf reflectance and transmittance; tested if nitrogen can still be retrieved if canopy structural effects were corrected for the canopy BRF; investigated to what extent nitrogen can be retrieved by linking a recalibrated PROSPECT-5 and canopy reflectance models such as INFORM.

  • Chromate contamination can pose a high risk to both the environment and public health. Previous studies have shown that CH4-based membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) is a promising method for chromate removal. In this study, we developed a multispecies biofilm model to study chromate reduction and its interaction with nitrate reduction in a CH4-based MBfR. The model-simulated results were consistent with the experimental data reported in the literature. The model showed that the presence of nitrate in the influent promoted the growth of heterotrophs, while suppressing methanotrophs and chromate reducers.
