  • This paper presents the effect of additive compounds on concrete used for the construction of hydraulic structures. The results showed that the use of fly ash replacing 10% of cement content has diminished both slump value and compressive strength of concrete. Yet, the application of superplasticizer with 0.8 liters per 100 kg cement and/or of waterproofing admixture with 0.4 liters per 100 kg have increased essentially both slump value and compressive strength. The binary additive compounds of fly ash and superplasticizer have improved either slump value or compressive strength, even though cement content was 10% less than conventional. In term of waterproof grade, the use of superpl...

  • High strength concrete and/or mortar is known as more brittle in comparison with conventional concrete, which in turn limits the application of such material into practical engineering. The brittleness of concrete can be relieved by using dispersed fibers (steel, glass, synthetic, and natural). Thus, in this paper, the authors studied the effect of glass fiber length on the properties of high strength self-compacting mortar at both the fresh and hardened state. The experimental results have shown that the higher glass fiber length, the lower the resultant slump flow of Self-Compacting Mortar (SCM) mixture. At the hardened state, fiber length does not affect the compressive strength of...

  • Fresh self-compacting steel fibre-reinforced concrete (SCSFRC) of strength class 30 MPa was casted into the small (100x100x400 mm3) and large (100x300x400 mm3) moulds. The large specimen was splitted into three small identical ones (100x100x400 mm3). All of the specimens were subjected to third-point bending in as-cast direction. Flexural strength of SCSFRC obtained from small specimens (100x100x400 mm3) yielded 10% higher than that from large specimens of the same size. While flexural strength defined by the small specimens (100x100x400 mm3) that were cut from the large specimens was almost the same. When pouring fresh SCSFRC into the small mould, steel fibres were orientated along ...

  • The scarcity of natural sand for construction in the current circumstance has made researchers and engineers search for another resource to replace it. This paper presents a study on the influence of crushed sand and natural sand on the properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) implemented for the Dong Nan Ren irrigation project-Bac Lieu province. The experiment pointed out that at fresh state the SCC mixture with natural sand had shown better performance than that with crushed sand. In the meantime, both mixtures with crushed and natural sand have yielded the self-compacting properties (slump flow value and T500) in accordance with the requirement of the concerned project. Compres...
