  • This paper introduces a spatially explicit agent-based simulation model for micro-scale cholera diffusion. The model simulates both an environmental reservoir of naturally occurring V.cholerae bacteria and hyperinfectious V. cholerae. Objective of the research is to test if runoff from open refuse dumpsites plays a role in cholera diffusion. A number of experiments were conducted with the model for a case study in Kumasi, Ghana, based on an epidemic in 2005.   • Intertidal sediments are critically important in controlling intertidal mudflat microphytobenthic primary productivity and the functioning of intertidal ecosystems. This paper demonstrates the possibility of deriving different intertidal sediment properties from coarse-to-medium resolution remote sensing imagery. Supervised and image based classification methods were used to map different substrate types based on the Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) algorithm.   • Developing a study aptitude test for international distance education students of geoinformation science and earth observation

  • Online diagnostic study aptitude tests are a common means of helping students select the correct type of course, and the correct mode of education. However, universities often lack the data to predict critical student success factors correctly. In this paper we discuss the development of an online entrance test for a university in the Netherlands, offering courses to international students. Aim of the test is to help future students decide on the mode of education (face-to-face or distance learning). Besides the development of the entrance test we also discuss its first results and future analysis to be conducted.

  • Self - organizing maps as an approach to exploring spatiotemporal diffusion patterns

  • This study demonstrates the applicability of SOMs (combined with Sammon’s Projection and GIS) in spatiotemporal diffusion analyses. It shows how to visualise diffusion patterns to identify (dis)similarity between individual waves and between individual waves and an overall time-series performing integrated analysis of synchrony and diffusion trajectories.
