Haiphong is a major industrial and port city in Vietnam. It plays an important role in the coastal shipping routes in the northern part of Vietnam. In recent years, the deposition and erosion of the coastal zone of Haiphong has increased in terms of intensity and scale, which has seriously influenced the social-economic activities of the area. Of Haiphong’s 125 km coastline, approximately 16.1 km is being eroded (about 23.0%). The erosion occurs at Dinh Vu Island, the southern part of Bai Nha Mac, alongside of the road No14, Cat Hai Island and Phu Long area at a rate of 1.2 to 9.6 m/year (averaging 5.4 m/year).
