  • In this paper, the effects of wind velocity according to height above the ground on the rain-wind induced vibration (RWIV) of stay cables are investigated. RWIV of the cable is modeled using the linear theory of cable vibration and the central difference algorithm. The wind speed profile according to height above the ground, which affects both aerodynamic forces acting on the cable and the oscillation of the rivulet on the cable surface, is taken into account in the theoretical formulation.   • In the present paper, the effect of multiple longitudinal web stiffeners (up to four) located at their optimum location on the ultimate strength of steel plate girders subjected to predominant shear loading, and combined bending and shear loading is investigated by using nonlinear inelastic analysis.   • Optimization of steel moment frames has been widely studied in the literature without considering shear deformation of panel-zones which is well-known to decrease the load-carrying capacity and increase the drift of structures. In this paper, a robust method for optimizing steel moment frames is developed in which the panelzone design is considered by using doubler plates.   • With rapid improvement of computing technology, nonlinear inelastic analysis methods are commonplace and permitted in new design code versions of AISC-LRFD, AASHTO, etc. However, their applications on practical design of steel structures are still very limited due to excessive computational efforts.
